Easy-to-use and ad-free. Simply the best JP-EN dictionary out there! Can't recommend it enough.

After seeing an update where pitch accent was added to words, I had to write this review. This app could inspire how all language dictionaries are made. Try comparing this to something like SpanishDict and you’ll see this is like a timeless work of art. The most intuitive and crazy impressive feature of this app is that you can write kanji, in any stroke order, and it will still show matches. I show this to Japanese people and they literally flip. I live on this dictionary, relied on it heavily in Japan, and have yet to find anything close to its quality in the past 2-3 years of using it.
Free? No data collected? Unbelievable!
やってみよ!
I like that it has an incredible amount of features, esp. while being offline. It’s easy to find the right word and new ones sometimes.
This app is extremely useful. By far the best I’ve used. If you are dealing with Japanese in any way, this is the app to use. NOTE TO DEVELOPERS: I’m often looking at stroke order. It would be nice to get back to the home search page by long pressing the back button instead of having to hit it multiple times.
From the layout to the example sentences, everything about this app is helpful
exceptionally useful dictionary app. thank you for making this free!
Great in all ways, but the export to bookmarks feature is paltry and could include more information. I especially wish there were “deep links” to the definitions so I could, link back from my Anki deck. I wrote the developer and offered to add those features if I could see the source code but never heard back.
Free dictionary that has just about everything I look up, even most slang, and is light weight enough to run in split screen on my ipad without crashing everything. For me, it’s perfect.
The vocabulary range it covers is huge, lots of examples, allows you to draw the kanji or search the english pronunciation on top of regular input. Recently added pitch accent markings.
It’s simple, easy to use. Accurate as well. Highly recommend being able to use the hiragana and katakana on your phone so that way you will be able to fully utilize this app. Very useful.
I use this app every day and the notetaking functionality allows me to really get into the mnemonic mindset and spill all my ideas onto the page. absolutely indispensable app, thank you blazej you killed it
I use it every day. Fantastic resource!
This is a great and fast way to look up words and examples for words
Hands down the best Japanese dictionary I came across!
初心者に向けて良いアプリ使い方簡単すごいアプリ
This is the best Japanese dictionary app I have found from apps offered in both Android and Apple available stores. It is only offered on Apple. The range of vocabulary is better than most, and where it’s not good enough you can make your own flash cards. The flash card study section of the program is better than all the others, much better than the red dictionary app that has been becoming obsolete from lack of updates to current systems. I have more control on how to study my cards and what I want which sides to show and whether to default to kana or kanji on kana prevalent words. Some things I wish were different: I wish I could move my own created flash cards from one bookmark to another rather than having to recreate a whole new flash card. I would like more control over cards I have learned and not learned, being able to change their status from red, yellow, or green.
Ditto
I like it’s easy to use, easy to search, you can create your own flash cards, also they have flash cards that go with the app. Very good overall. I tried many apps before but use only this one.
goat dictionary... really don't need anything else 🐔👍
Just one word: This is the best Japanese dictionary app I’ve ever encountered in my life!!
This dictionary app has one of the best UIs out there. Very easy and intuitive. The dictionary allows you to search using Japanese or English words, and will also provide animated stroke order pictures for kanji. It also lists words as “commonly used”, “verb”, “noun” etc. to help refine searches. The only downside is that the example sentences come from JDict. The sentences are made by non-natives learners and do not require a text reference. The quality of those sentences is very poor and I would not recommend using them as a study resource. Other than that, this app is extremely useful and lightweight.
I love this dictionary and use it everyday! I would’ve given it 5 stars in the past, but the new voices to help with pronunciation are horrendous. It’s like 1980’s War Games style now. I hope there’s a way to get better voices at some point.
The best, love it !
As someone who’s learning Japanese, this comes in handy when looking for certain words.
Delivers exactly what i expect from a dictionary. Free and works offline.
I rarely write reviews but this has proven so useful to me when studying Japanese!! If I ever want to know how to say a word or what a word means I can just look at my phone and know instantly which is very helpful
The single best thing they could have added. This has become a nearly-perfect dictionary, I’m so glad it is continuing to be improved.
Easy to use and with the recent pitch accent additions, this is now on par with Pleco, but for Japanese. Stellar work 6/5
I have used this app for a while and have always loved it but the fact that last week the Shirabe Jisho team added accent markers is amazing. Thank you for this app and making it so functional and helpful for Japanese learners.
i like this app a lot, but is there a feature to copy links of words one might look up?
For the pasts several months, the read aloud feature’s voice has been awful. It seems to have fallen greatly in quality and now sounds like a robot woman. Has anyone else noticed this??
had to give this app 5 stars as soon as i saw the pitch accent update. this has been an indispensable tool for experiencing japanese content and learning the language, which i've been doing for about half a year now. i probably won't stop using it any time soon.
I love the new pitch accent feature.
I’m so happy that they finally added pitch accent. I was using two dictionary apps before, but now I don’t need to! Also includes parts of speech, example sentences, all the usual stuff. My biggest complaint is that it doesn’t include common compounds.
I’m a beginner to Japanese and this app helps me so much I take lessons at a tutor and this helps me with my homework!
We don’t deserve this dictionary. Being able to search by drawing a character is an absolute game changer and I love having the context sentences and conjugations. Thank you so much Shirabe.
I’ve been using this app for 8 or so years and it’s always been consistently the best learning companion and dictionary for Japanese learners. I’ve recommended this to most people I know studying Japanese on their own, but also to native Japanese speakers! Native Japanese get a kick out of the name, and likewise find it very useful for looking up terms for English conversations. It’s also been a great help to me in expanding my vocab, learning more kanji, making flash cards, and even improving listening skills. The latest update even added pitch accent, which is super helpful and a really pleasant surprise!
Winner! Winner! Chicken Dinner! Love the fact that this is a very thorough product and it’s totally free! There are no in-app purchases, and there is no data collected. I wish all app developers would follow this model. I don’t mind an occasional in app purchase, but ads drive me crazy! This is fantastic! Download immediately!
This is easily the best Japanese to English dictionary I’ve used in my Japanese learning journey! It is fast, doesn’t require an internet connection, and is very feature rich! I love being able to swap between keyboard types as I’m searching for a word, as well as being able to draw a kanji I’m looking up. It also has a flash card feature with spaced repetition like Anki! I am still an Anki user, but I did use this feature when I was learning kana and it works really well. And the best thing is it’s 100% free! (Although, it’s good enough that I would’ve paid for it) Overall, if you’re learning Japanese and need a really good digital dictionary, get this app. Can’t go wrong!
This is hands down the best app for learning Japanese
I LOVE this app. It saved me about 15,000 times when i was studying abroad in Japan, and the best part is that it works completely offline. If you ever need any kind of Japanese-English dictionary (even for phrases) don't hesitate to try this out. It's simply the best.
Why isn’t there an app like this for every language?👌
Helped me pass the ap
The entire app works offline, which is amazing! There’s also so many example sentences for every entry, and the dictionary itself is quite comprehensive. It’s the perfect app!
5 stars for sure ❤️
Very relatable app for me thank you for creating this Your creation is really make me comfortable for learning kanji to get easy and more easier thanks
